Single-cartridge Seals: Easy And Efficient Sealing For Pumps

Posted by Admin on June, 02, 2025

Single-cartridge seals are mechanical seals of the pumps and rotating machines used to stop fluid leakage. They are manufactured as a whole unit containing all the main parts, which makes them easy to install, use, and maintain. Because these seals are reliable and cost-effective, they are popular among many industries such as chemical processing, water treatment, pharmaceuticals, oil & gas, and food production.

Single-cartridge seals are a good idea if companies wish for convenient and low-maintenance, reliable, and straightforward sealing systems. Their all-in-one design cuts down on installation time, maximizes performance, and saves on costly leaks. Whether you are handling water, chemicals, or other liquids, sealing with single cartridges can help make equipment last longer and prevent or reduce repairs.

What Are Single Cartridge Seals?

A cartridge actuated seal is a factory-assembled mechanical seal. Very often, it contains the seal faces, the gland plate, the sleeve, and the secondary seals, all assembled in one small compact unit. This design minimizes the chances of making mistakes in installation because all the components are pre-aligned and pre-positioned.

These seals are known as “single” as they have one set of sealing faces: a rotating face and a stationary face. These faces contact each other to stop the leakage of liquid along the body of the pump/mixer-shaft.

How Do They Work?

In layman’s terms, the single cartridge seals work by giving a tight seal between the moving shaft and a static pump housing. The rotating and stationary seal faces are sandwiched together with sufficient pressure to hold them together, but the shaft is free to turn. A squeeze film of liquid between the faces provides lubrication and cooling.

Under pressure, temperature changes, and vibrations, the seal faces keep an installed device from leaking when properly installed. All the unit’s components are designed and produced at the factory, meaning that the seal faces are already properly aligned at the factory without any trouble, hence, more efficient and lower chance of failure.

Benefits of Single Cartridge Seals

Easy to Install: The cartridge design eliminates complex assembly requirements. All it does is fit onto the pump shaft with a few bolts and alignments. This saves time and minimises human error.

Reduces Downtime: They are easier to install and replace, therefore helping minimize downtime for equipment during maintenance or seal change.

Increases Safety: Correct sealing avoids fluid extravasation, hence increasing the safety of one’s workplace, especially in chemical and pharmaceutical plants.

Protects Equipment: These single-cartridge seals enable protection of the pump shaft and all other internal parts from wear and corrosive elements by preventing the fluid from leaking out.

Cost-Effective: They are costly upfront than simple seals but save financially in the long run, reduce failures, maintenance, and fluid loss.

Common Applications

The following is widely used with single cartridge seals.

Centrifugal pumps

Mixers and agitators

Blowers and compressors

Water and wastewater treatment systems

Food and beverage equipment

Their versatility and reliability will make them a good choice for dealing with clean water, oils, chemicals, and other fluids at reasonable pressure and temperatures.
