what is a double mechanical seal


A double mechanical seal is a sealing arrangement with two mechanical seals mounted in series—an inboard seal (process side) and an outboard seal (atmosphere side). Between them sits a barrier or buffer fluid that helps lubricate and cool the seal faces, while also acting as a protective layer. This design minimizes leakage to the environment and supports stable sealing in demanding applications.
